An American in Austen (2024)

Directed By: Clare Niederpruem

Written By: Cameron Johann

Harriet, who thinks that no real man compares to Mr. Darcy, is transported into Pride & Prejudice and gets an unexpected chance to find out. Starring Eliza Bennett and Nicholas Bishop.

I loved seeing writer Harriet’s reactions upon being transported into her favorite book. There are many hilarious scenes where she tries to keep the story on track while at the same time her presence there serves as a wrecking ball in the narrative. I would be very surprised if the director and screenplay writer are not also huge Austenites, due to the amount of care and attention they put into creating the Bennet family et al. Everyone is cast perfectly. I especially loved this marriage obsessed Mrs Bennet who is painted in a more sympathetic light than other adaptations give her and whose motivations are love and realistic fears for her daughters. Oh and a kind of goofy Mr Darcy who plagiarizes Scott and lurks in bushes was a great take. This movie made me laugh out loud so many times.

I only wish we’d had more time to spend with Ethan, Harriet’s modern day boyfriend, who is a gem of a human being. Director’s cut when?

Favorite Quote: -I just always thought I would be walking along the sidewalk one day, and like a dashing stranger would just come up to me, just sweep me off my feet.

-You’ve just described a kidnapping

Favorite Kiss: After she pours out her heart to Ethan and asks him to marry her.
