Notes of Autumn (2023)

Directed By: Troy Scott

Written By: Rick Garman

Ellie is a fun-loving, classically trained pianist living in the city who gave up on her passion long ago. Her best friend Leo lives in the rustic outskirts of British Columbia. He’s a famous author with writer’s block who can’t seem to finish another installment in his highly popular book series. Realizing they both need a change of scenery, they decide to swap places, only to find themselves completely lost in new surroundings. Ellie gets tangled up in helping Sam, Leo’s neighbor, put together a musical performance for a local fundraiser. Leo strikes up a friendship with Ellie’s good friend Matt and opens himself up to writing something different that really inspires him. Their newfound friendships turn into something far more meaningful, and as both Ellie and Leo take part in the joys of the autumn season, they also discover their hearts belong somewhere very different than they ever thought possible. Starring Ashley Williams, Luke Macfarlane, Marcus Rosner and Peter Porte.

Three relationships are beautifully portrayed here: the two romantic couples, of course, and the friendship between Ellie and Leo. The two friends are at a crossroads, Leo is super successful but has lost all interest in his moneymaking book series and Ellie is not so successful, having left music to pursue a practical career that she has no interest in; both of them need to rediscover their passion. Enter the love interests, Matt and Sam, there to give them inspiration and to push them out of their comfort zones.

I love movies about writers and this is one of the best ones I’ve seen. When Leo is typing he “sees “ his main characters (played with relish by everyone’s favorite When Calls the Heart couple) and these scenes are interspersed throughout and provide moments of humor. Autumn is on full display in the movie as well with beautiful foliage, bright classical music and the color scheme throughout. Ellie loses her luggage for most of the film and resorts to wearing Leo’s menswear (albeit suspiciously well tailored to her petite frame) – a fun detail. At one point, Ellie mourns her failed life including wearing brown and Sam protests, “You look great in brown!”

Favorite Quote: Someone made him feel like it was safe to try. Because now he doesn’t have to be scared of failing. Because now someone’s always gonna be there. He sees that you’re ready for a little push.

Favorite Kiss: Luke and Matt have incredible chemistry and every scene where they are together, the earnestness and the yearning is palpable.
