Inspired by her father’s acclaimed legacy in dog sled racing, Anya decides to follow in his footsteps. After his passing, she heads to Finland to participate in the 40th annual Joulurauha race, her father’s final race where he fell short of the victory. Following an injury to her lead dog during the qualifying race, Anya finds herself partnered with a new canine companion owned by journalist and former racer Cole, who aims to pen a story about her journey. Struggling to build trust with her new dog and facing her father’s rival, Monty, Anya must navigate many challenges as she strives to win the race. Starring Kim Matula, Beau Mirchoff and Nichole Sakura.

While I wait for my most anticipated movies of the year, I’m revisiting the five star movies from last year. This one was a welcome surprise. The Finnish setting was so Christmasy with the snow and cold and Anya’s cousin Lavi (my favorite character) introduced them to all the cultural Christmas fun. None of this feels like info dumping, instead fitting naturally into the Christmas dog race that Anya is competing in with the help of journalist Cole. The peril along the trail was green screened and there was never a doubt that Anya will prevail, but I’m not watching Hallmark for tension, so this was a plus for me😆
Cole was a good fit for Anya, with his laid-back attitude a good influence on her intensity, they each appreciate each other’s strengths by the end and the relationship feels well grounded. Also the sauna scene was very hot! Her friendship with Elyse was also a strength of the movie. Elyse was a true and loyal friend, and found family is celebrated. Not to give anything away, but even the “villain” of the movie was multidimensional.

Favorite Quote: Elyse, I’m so sorry that I said I’d be a loser with no family. Even if I don’t win today I will be a loser with a family.
Favorite Kiss: Elyse and Lavi have an almost instant attraction and sweet flirtation throughout the movie and I was rooting for them as much – or more – than the main couple.
